A youth football game in Winter Park, Florida, has sparked a social media backlash after police were called following a dispute between league officials and the parents of a three-year-old player who reportedly scored 10 goals despite being limited to 12 minutes on the pitch.
Videos circulating online show Nevada Pierre displaying impressive dribbling skills, controlling the ball and racing towards goal during a youth match.
According to his parents, league officials repeatedly benched the toddler for dominating play and preventing other children from getting enough time on the ball.
“Because he had the ball for too long, and nobody else could get the ball, so they called the police,” one of the parents said.
The dispute escalated when league staff asked the family to leave and offered them a refund. The game coordinator then called 911, reporting an “unruly parent” who was allegedly following him, recording him for Instagram and causing a disturbance.
By the time officers arrived, the match had ended and the family was preparing to leave.
The Winter Park Police Department confirmed that officers helped relay the league’s message regarding the refund. Police also noted that the family was fully cooperative. No arrests were made, and no trespass warnings were issued.
Nevada’s parents maintain that their son was unfairly penalised for outperforming his peers. His mother, Martasia Griffin, said the incident left the three-year-old confused and traumatised, making him fearful that he had done something wrong.
Footage of the incident has attracted millions of views across TikTok and Instagram, prompting criticism from prominent figures, including children’s media creator Ms Rachel, who described the incident as “racist” and “disgusting”.
“I’m LIVID! Please sports people give him all the experiences and love. @nevadaney10 We’d love to have him on our show to share his amazing skills. I need sports people to show up for him,” she wrote on Instagram.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III and retired American football player Eddie Johnson also publicly condemned the league’s handling of the incident.
The league operator, i9 Sports Maitland/Winter Park, acknowledged the incident in a statement, saying it had contacted the family and launched an internal review.
“The respectful treatment and well-being of every child and family matter deeply to us. We have reached out to the family and have begun a review that includes speaking with those involved. While we work to understand the circumstances, we will not speculate or share unverified information. We appreciate everyone who has brought their concerns to our attention,” the statement said.
