Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and former County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria appear to have rekindled their political bond, with the two increasingly projecting a united front ahead of the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race.
Mosiria, who has declared his intention to challenge Governor Johnson Sakaja, is now seeking to build his political future under Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP), placing the former governor at the centre of his campaign calculations.
Their renewed association has played out on social media, where the two have exchanged light-hearted moments, including a robot dance that appeared to symbolise Mosiria taking up projects Sonko left unfinished after his removal from office in 2020.
Beneath the playful exchanges lies a political message: continuity, unfinished business and a possible attempt to reshape Nairobi’s leadership conversation.
The partnership has since moved beyond online banter. On October 26, Mosiria announced that Sonko had officially endorsed his gubernatorial bid, saying the two would work together to sell their agenda to Nairobi residents.
“Sonko has officially endorsed me for Nairobi Governor! Niko ready, tutembee Nairobi tuuze sera zetu!” Mosiria declared.
He also said Sonko had asked him to prioritise the long-awaited Pumwani Maternity Hospital project and the expansion of Mutuini Hospital if elected. The pledges place Sonko’s development agenda at the heart of Mosiria’s campaign messaging.
For Sonko, the alliance offers an opportunity to remain influential in Nairobi politics while popularising NEDP as the country moves towards the next General Election. The party has increasingly featured in discussions surrounding aspirants seeking political platforms, although the extent of its eventual alliances remains to be seen.
Mosiria, meanwhile, has been taking his gubernatorial ambitions to residents, drawing on his experience in Nairobi’s health, environment and customer service departments. His visibility on social media has helped make him a recognisable figure beyond county government offices.
The political reunion comes as Sonko continues to navigate legal challenges and scrutiny while maintaining an active presence in public affairs. His support could give Mosiria access to an established political network, but the campaign will ultimately be judged on its proposals for Nairobi’s persistent service-delivery challenges.
As the 2027 contest takes shape, the renewed Sonko-Mosiria partnership puts NEDP firmly in the conversation over who will seek to succeed Sakaja and which unfinished projects will feature in the battle for City Hall.
