Does your company pass the trust test?

Something has shifted in Kenya’s marketing landscape. Today, a customer who sees a campaign in the morning can test it before lunchtime.

She compares the promise on the billboard with the queue at the branch, the delay on the loan app, and the review an influencer posted on X. When the two do not match, the campaign works against the brand that paid for it.

And yet for long, marketing campaigns largely measured success through reach. Marketing agencies and departments presented impressions, share of voice, and advertising value equivalents, and boards approved budgets on that basis.

To be clear, reach still has its place. The difference is that today’s technology and lifestyles have introduced another dimension: speed. The result is a shortened feedback loop.

Trust in Kenya moves through people. Chamas, church groups, alumni networks, and family WhatsApp threads decide which bank, hospital, or insurer earns a hearing. A customer who has managed money on M-Pesa for over a decade is used to checking before she commits. She rewards companies that keep their word, and she tells others when one lets her down.

This has direct financial consequences. Credibility lowers the cost of every future message. It shortens sales cycles, steadies investor confidence during bad news, and earns fair hearing from regulators and journalists when something goes wrong. A company that has spent years proving its claims enters a crisis with goodwill in reserve, and that reserve often decides how quickly it recovers.

It is no coincidence that across borders in Nigeria, marketing and agency executives last week convened the Marketing Edge National Marketing Stakeholders’ Summit. The organisers built the event around the theme “Cultural Authenticity as Currency: Turning Heritage into Modern Branding and Marketing”, and gave a full session to trust, truth, and credibility in marketing communications.

Kenyan boardrooms should take note. The same pressures are reshaping how our customers judge the firms that serve them.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, three pillars have stood the test of time around marketing campaigns.

The first pillar is evidence. Every claim should rest on something the audience can check. A lender that talks about supporting small traders should publish how many it has financed and let a trader or an independent body confirm the figure.

A hospital that talks about quality should point to its accreditation and its patient outcomes. Commitments need dates, and progress reports need to follow.

The second pillar is people. Figures gain meaning when someone the audience recognises stands behind them: the nurse on a night shift, the dairy farmer who secured her first loan, the boda boda rider who has paid off his motorcycle one daily instalment at a time. These voices carry weight when they speak in their own words about their own experience.

Culture rounds out the list. Language, humour, and shared memory tell an audience that a brand understands them. Kiswahili, Sheng, and our many local languages carry meaning a translated script loses.

Audiences quickly spot a brand that borrows cultural symbols without understanding them. Cultural fluency is itself a form of evidence, because it shows the brand listens.

Against this backdrop, what should Kenyan companies change?

Firms should start every brief with one question: what can we prove? Messages built on verifiable facts travel further through earned media and hold up under scrutiny.

They should measure trust. Boards should ask for sentiment, stakeholder perception, media tone, third-party endorsement, and customer retention alongside reach figures. These numbers tell a chief executive far more about the health of the brand.

Preparing leaders to communicate effectively is yet another important requirement.

Kenyans expect chief executives who speak plainly, acknowledge problems early, and return with updates. A leader who builds that record in ordinary times earns patience when times are hard.

The conversations in Nigeria’s authentic marketing summit belongs to the whole continent. Nairobi has a strong record in purpose-led communication across health, financial services, and conservation, and our industry has much to contribute. The companies that lead the next decade will be the ones whose claims stand up when customers check them.
