Hafidh Ameir Hassan lived much of his life away from the political spotlight. But when his wife, Samia Suluhu Hassan, became Tanzania’s first female president in 2021, he quietly made history as the country’s first-ever First Gentleman.

Ameir built his career in agriculture and public service, working as an agricultural academic and officer in Zanzibar before retiring from government service.

His professional life was largely centred on agriculture and academia, areas that remained closely associated with him even after his wife rose through Tanzania’s political ranks.

Unlike the high-profile political figures surrounding his wife, Ameir maintained a remarkably private life and rarely sought public attention.

Ameir married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978. Together, they had four children: three sons and one daughter.

Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, later followed her mother into public service and has served in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.

For years, Ameir was known primarily as Samia’s husband and a professional in agriculture, rather than as a public figure in his own right.

Ameir’s place in Tanzania’s history changed dramatically in March 2021, when Samia assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli.

Her elevation made her Tanzania’s first female president and, in turn, made Ameir the country’s first First Gentleman.

It was a historic position, but one he approached with characteristic restraint. Rather than turning the role into a prominent public platform, Ameir largely remained behind the scenes, supporting his wife and maintaining his private life.

As First Gentleman, Ameir maintained a low public profile and rarely appeared at major public events. His role was largely supportive and ceremonial, accompanying President Samia on some official engagements.

Ameir died on September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar. He was 76.

His death was announced by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, friends, and the people of Tanzania. Ndejembi said Ameir died at around 8 a.m. while receiving treatment for heart disease.
