A high-speed race for a better view of the Great Wildebeest Migration nearly ended in tragedy in Tanzania over the weekend after a safari vehicle plunged into the Mara River.

In a viral video seen by TNX Africa, the vehicle carrying four Swiss tourists and a local driver is seen crashing directly into the river on Sunday, August 30.

According to local outlet The Tanzania Times, the driver, identified as Ramadhan Miraji Mbaga, lost control of a Toyota Land Cruiser operated by Nature Responsible Safari Company while reportedly speeding to outpace rival tour vehicles near a popular crossing point.

The Land Cruiser veered off course before plunging down a steep riverbank and landing headfirst in the water.

The Mara River is known for its population of Nile crocodiles and hippopotamuses, making the incident particularly dangerous. However, nearby bystanders quickly mounted a rescue effort, with all four passengers and the driver reportedly pulled from the river safely.

No fatalities were reported.

The incident has renewed concerns over reckless driving inside Serengeti National Park, particularly during the annual wildebeest migration when large numbers of safari vehicles converge at popular river-crossing points.

Conservationists have previously raised concerns about aggressive driving by some safari guides competing to give tourists close-up views of the migration, warning that such practices can put both visitors and wildlife at risk.

Nature Responsible Safari later issued a statement confirming that all four clients and the driver were safe, with no physical injuries reported.

The company said the tourists had continued with their holiday and were in Zanzibar, where they were proceeding with their vacation as planned.
