Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, was forced to throw cash into a crowd and make a hasty exit after supporters overwhelmed him during a visit to Kayole.
In a viral video seen by TNX Africa, the lawmaker, who is eyeing the Nairobi senatorial seat, struggled to control a large crowd that had gathered for what appeared to be a political rally.
Dressed in a black sweatshirt, Jalang’o urged people to form an orderly queue so he could distribute cash.
However, despite some attempts to line up, the crowd continued pushing and jostling, making it impossible to maintain order.
Standing at the front of the queue, the MP was still surrounded by supporters chanting, “Tutam.”

At one point, Jalang’o, who was briefly lifted above the crowd, appealed for calm, insisting there was enough money for everyone.
“Acheni kusukumana! Pesa iko!” he said.
The plea had little effect. Minutes later, he threw the cash into the crowd, triggering a frantic scramble.
The video does not show the exact moment he left, but once the rush for the money subsided, some people were heard asking whether he had already departed.
“Kwani ameenda?” one man asked.
As the gathering dispersed, people walked towards a green gate, with some chanting “Wantam” while others voiced their frustration.
Towards the end of the clip, what appeared to be police officers moved in to disperse the crowd. A loud bang was heard, prompting the person recording the video to retreat into the premises.
The incident sparked mixed reactions on social media.
On X, user Yediads wrote, “Could have caused a stampede and deaths.”
Another user, Hakeem Kymani, commented: “This reflects common dynamics in Kenyan grassroots campaigning, where crowds in urban informal areas are swayed by candidates financially, turning rallies into chaotic exchanges.”
The incident comes days after Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa was forced to flee a political rally in his constituency after a cash giveaway turned chaotic.
The situation escalated when the money ran out, leaving many attendees empty-handed.
Frustrated residents turned hostile, chanting the names of rival political figures before damaging Barasa’s vehicles and sound equipment as he escaped.
