Newly elected Ol Kalou MP Sammy Kamau Ngotho received a rousing welcome at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday after taking the oath of office, with Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) allied lawmakers turning up in matching green blazers to celebrate the party’s first parliamentary seat.

The first-time legislator, who had earlier grabbed attention by travelling to Parliament aboard a public matatu for his swearing-in ceremony, was greeted with cheers, handshakes and embraces by DCP MPs and senators waiting outside the National Assembly.

The jubilant leaders posed for group photos before chanting opposition slogans in a show of party unity.

The lawmakers’ coordinated green attire mirrored a similar show of solidarity staged by DCP senators last week following Ngotho’s victory in the July 16 Ol Kalou by-election.

Male legislators wore green blazers paired with grey trousers, while female leaders complemented the look with green blazers and skirts or trousers.

Leading the celebrations were Nyandarua Senator John Methu, the party’s secretary general-designate, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, Starehe MP Amos Mwago and Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto, among other elected leaders and party officials.

Inside the House, Ngotho was escorted to the Speaker’s podium by Wanjiku Muhia and Roysambu MP Kamande Mwafrika before taking the oath of office, officially beginning his tenure as the Ol Kalou MP.

The swearing-in capped a memorable day for the new legislator, who had opted to use public transport instead of a convoy to travel from Ol Kalou to Nairobi, saying he wanted to remain connected to ordinary Kenyans.

His decision earned praise online and reinforced the image of a leader keen to maintain close ties with the electorate.

Ngotho won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election on a DCP ticket, handing the opposition party a landmark victory and securing its first seat in the National Assembly.
