Young Nairobians trading nightlife for daytime hangouts, and making money

Africa News News African November 5, 2026 · Comments off

For a growing number of young Nairobians, the most desirable weekend is no longer necessarily the one that ends at sunrise, but the one that leaves enough of the day still ahead.

Ronny Mokaya, a 23-year-old software engineer and co-founder of a Nairobi hiking company, says his preference for daytime events is rooted in his love of fitness and nature.

“I’m very intentional with my weekends. I don’t want to waste them,” he says.

This sentiment is common in conversations with young Nairobians about “weekend maxxing” — making the most of their weekends.

Another recurring theme is the need for more third spaces in the city. Third spaces are the places beyond home, which is the first space and work (the second). They include cafés, parks, libraries, creative hubs and public spaces where people can gather without obligation, friendships can take root and community can happen naturally.

“From what I have observed among my friends, most of them go on hikes and art classes or photography events,” says Mokaya.

“I lean more toward daytime events because you connect more with people, and unlike nighttime events or parties where people are there to unwind or release some tensions, for daytime events you can get to know people on a more personal level.”

Tiffany Kanene equally prefers before-dark activities. This comes from her ‘strict parents’ she lives with and safety concerns.

She talks of several incidents her peers have encountered in bars and late-night concerts, and ‘Nairobbery’ and why she chooses a quieter, more polite gathering during the day.

“I focus on my hobbies, like crocheting and working out, which I can do during the day and alone,” says Tiffany.

“I meet my friends too, but they’re also not party or clubbing people.”

To cater for this growing community of people who prefer daytime events, Wambui Mburu and her sister started an events company that merges finance and fun.

Their love for games started in Rwanda, where they were studying entrepreneurship. When they came back in 2023, they started hosting games at home and entertaining people.

“I love intentionally meeting people and having intellectual conversations,” says Wambui.

A hike, a football game, a picnic or a coffee with friends can offer something nightlife sometimes cannot: time to talk, move, meet someone new and still have Sunday ahead.

For Ronny, Wambui and Tiffany, that distinction is simple.

“Most times we’re in our homes, just lying there. But actual life, experience is done when you’re outside,” says Mokaya.

“You can watch someone do a hike on your phone, but you won’t even feel a minute of how they felt when they were actually doing that activity.”
