A routine evening patrol along the Nairobi River ended in a courtroom appearance for two young men after police officers uncovered an illicit cannabis farm tucked along the riverbanks in Kariobangi North.
Thimphil Odhiambo was charged with cultivating cannabis sativa (bhang) contrary to Section 3(2) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
Police officers acting on a tip-off raided a riverbed in Darfur, Kariobangi North Estate, on October 9, 2026. Odhiambo was allegedly caught tilling a concealed patch where 39 bhang stems worth an estimated Sh10,000 were growing. The charge sheet stated that the plants were not intended for authorised medicinal use.
Odhiambo appeared before Makadara Law Courts magistrate Jumwa Maiya alongside Collins Odongo Odero, who faces separate charges of possessing narcotic drugs. Police reportedly found several rolled bhang joints on Odero during the arrest.
The officers were dispatched to the scene after concerned residents raised the alarm about a small, illicit crop flourishing along the riverbank. Both suspects denied the charges. The case will be heard on December 11, 2026.
Meanwhile, in Njiru Sub-county, a 50-year-old Nairobi man is facing assault charges after allegedly attacking his 20-year-old son, who has lived with paralysis since the age of one.
Sospeter Muyesu-Vusara appeared in court following his arrest over an incident on March 31, 2026, in Ruai Manyatta.
According to court documents, Muyesu-Vusara allegedly assaulted his son, who has a disability and cannot speak, claiming the young man was “of no importance”.
The complainant’s mother told police she was away when the alleged attack occurred. Upon returning home, she found her son lying on the floor with a badly swollen head and vomiting. She rushed him to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he was admitted for six days.
Family members allege the accused had subjected household members to prolonged physical and emotional abuse. Following the mother’s report, police arrested Muyesu-Vusara and charged him with assault.
Appearing before magistrate Jumwa Kimaiyo, he denied the charges, claiming the case arose from a misunderstanding and that his wife had pushed for his prosecution.
