ODM Party Leader and Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga was conspicuously absent as the Odinga family gathered in Bondo, Siaya County, for the handover and dedication ceremony of the Raila Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

His absence drew attention amid renewed public concern over his health and false reports on social media claiming that the veteran politician had died.

His message was instead delivered by his nephew, Raila Odinga Junior. Before delivering the address, Raila Junior apologised to those gathered on behalf of Oburu.

“Allow me to first convey apologies of Dr Oburu Oginga, who is unable to be with us today. He sends his greetings and deep appreciation to everyone who has gathered here.”

According to Oburu’s secretariat, he had been preparing his official speech for the mausoleum handover when reports about his health began circulating online.

The office said he was subsequently advised to take forced rest and avoid heavy physical engagements as he continued his recovery.

Oburu’s son, Jaoko Oburu Odinga, was among the family members present at the ceremony, while his father remained away from the public gathering.

His absence came a day after his office dismissed social media claims that he had died.

In a statement issued on October 6, the secretariat described the reports as false and malicious, assuring the public that Oburu was “well, safe, and in good spirits.”

The rumours followed reports that Oburu had recently received medical attention at Nairobi Hospital.

His office has not publicly disclosed details of his medical condition but has maintained that he is recovering under medical supervision.

The mausoleum ceremony brought together members of the Odinga family, senior Nyanza leaders and other dignitaries.

President William Ruto led the official handover and dedication ceremony at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, where the mausoleum serves as the final resting place of former Prime minister Raila Odinga alongside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
