Kiambu activist Ezra Gacheru has gone viral after confronting traffic police officers whom he accused of collecting bribes from motorists along Kiambu Road.

Gacheru recorded the encounter on his phone as he challenged the officers over alleged payments being collected from matatu operators along the busy highway.

In the video, Gacheru is heard saying, “Anagalieni, we must fight corruption in this country.”

One of two officers standing near a stopped matatu then approaches him and asks, “Kwani kichwa yako ni mbaya?”

Gacheru turns to the matatu driver and tells him not to give the officers any money, appearing to trigger a confrontation with a female officer.

“Unazo umempea ukamwambia atupee?” she asks him.

Another officer is heard questioning whether Gacheru is mentally well and telling him to take medicine. Gacheru disputes the remarks as he continues recording the encounter.

He also points to passengers inside the matatu and links the alleged corruption to vehicles carrying excess passengers.

“Angalia hawa watu wako hapa ndani, wamebeba excess,” he says.

Gacheru continues calling on members of the public to share the footage, saying this would help in the fight against corruption.

“We must liberate this country. Hamtakua mnatufanya hivi, mnaokota pesa huku, hakuna,” he says.

The confrontation escalates when the male officer approaches Gacheru again while questioning him.

“Wewe kichwa yako ni mzuri?” the officer asks as he appears to pursue the activist.

Gacheru is seen running while continuing to record the encounter, with the officer eventually stopping and leaving him alone.

From a distance, Gacheru continues speaking about the alleged corruption and calls on traffic officers to stop the practice.

At one point, he again urges matatu operators not to hand over money to the officers.

“Usiwapatie, pita. Ujinga hatutaki,” he says.

One of the officers is later heard calling on people to arrest Gacheru, prompting the activist to question who should instead be arrested.

“Wanaokota hongo hapa. Ati anishike, ashike nani?” he asks.

Gacheru also says he will report the matter to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The footage has since sparked reactions online, with some users praising Gacheru for confronting the officers over the alleged bribery.

“They think you are mad because nobody else is fighting corruption the same way…” Mugth’o Media Network wrote in a reaction to the footage.

Other users called on the EACC to investigate the allegations and demanded greater accountability from public officials.

“EACC, we must end corruption on our roads. Kenyans deserve transparency and accountability and honest public service,” Eliphan DCP Youth Voice wrote.
