At least five people have died and five others were injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway and crashed while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday.

Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 freighter operated by cargo airline 21 Air on Amazon’s behalf, ran off the airport’s diagonal runway shortly before 2 p.m. local time after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The aircraft struck several vehicles on the ground and caught fire, according to multiple international reports from Reuters, Al jazeera and CNN.

Three of the five injured people were in critical condition, while two others suffered less severe injuries, Miami-Dade officials said.

Several people were trapped in vehicles struck by the aircraft, while the pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the cockpit before being rescued by emergency crews. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene as firefighters battled the blaze.

The crash prompted authorities to close all runways and taxiways at the airport and impose a ground stop, disrupting hundreds of flights. Operations resumed later in the evening, although significant delays and cancellations were reported.

The aircraft came to rest near the northwest end of the airport after crossing the runway and striking vehicles on a nearby road.

Although the plane carried Amazon Prime Air branding, it was operated by 21 Air, a North Carolina-based cargo airline that flies on Amazon’s behalf. Amazon confirmed the crash and said it was working with authorities.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration also involved. Investigators are examining the aircraft’s flight data, maintenance records and other evidence to determine what caused the runway overrun.

Authorities have not yet established a cause of the crash.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to cargo aircraft safety, particularly the risks involved when aircraft overrun runways at busy airports. Miami International Airport is one of the major cargo hubs in the United States, making the crash significant beyond its immediate impact on passengers and airport operations.

Amazon expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said its priority was supporting those affected while authorities investigate the incident.
