Osun Senator Urges Patronage of Local Contractors

The Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi, on Saturday flagged off the construction of a 0.5-kilometer Akinola-Agbaraale road project in Iwo, Osun State, saying local contractors must be encouraged to handle developmental projects in the state to stimulate the economy.

Oyewumi, the lawmaker representing Osun West in the Senate, said the road was chosen for construction by him and the leadership of the Accord Party in Iwo Local Government due to its importance to the socio-economic activities of the residents, and assured that more of such interventions should be expected from the ruling party in the state.

The lawmaker, who said the road project will be completed before the end of the year, also disclosed plans to donate solar lights to some communities within Iwo town.

“This project is part of the promise I made to you during my campaign before my election into the Senate. When I decided to construct a road in Iwo, I asked our leaders in Iwoland to suggest which road we should do, and they chose this one.

“When I became a Senator, I told my people that any road we will construct must be strategic and must not be a road that has been previously done. I was told this Akinola road is over 100 years old, and it has never been done before.

“I want you to cooperate with the contractors. They are competent, and I believe they can deliver a good job. They are even from Osun West. I believe we need to encourage local contractors to stimulate the economy and prevent capital flight. I also want you to monitor the work and call their attention to anything that is not done well. By God’s grace, this road will be commissioned before December,” Oyewumi said.

He commended the residents for supporting Adeleke’s reelection and charged them to continue supporting all Accord candidates in the 2027 general elections.

“The Governor expressed his appreciation to the people of Iwo and promised not to disappoint you,” the lawmaker said.

Earlier, the Accord Party chairman for Iwo LG, Halidu Adeoye, recalled some of the projects executed by Oyewumi in the local government.

Adeoye said the Akinola-Agbaraale road project was preceded by the construction of two inner roads executed by the lawmaker in Iwo LG, adding that Oyewumi earlier constructed Oriolowo/Agbele and Fojugbagi/Adediti roads in the community.

He called on the residents to support Oyewumi second term ambition, assuring that the lawmaker will continue to execute projects that will positively impact the lives of the people, if given a chance of another term in the National Assembly.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, a community leader, Musliu Akinola, commended the lawmaker and urged people to support the project with prayers.

The lawmaker, who served as the campaign Director General for the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke in the 2026 off-cycle election, is the Accord Party candidate for the Osun West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
