A Canadian politician from New Brunswick has gone viral after accidentally reading AI-generated instructions aloud during an official speech.

In a clip seen by TNX Africa, Progressive Conservative MLA Bill Oliver addressed the legislature but began reading from his notes with the line, “Here’s a more natural flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points.”

Many generative AI tools include editing suggestions and prompts to help users refine their text.

It appears Oliver mistakenly left those instructions in his speech and read them aloud.

While politicians have increasingly turned to AI to help draft speeches, Oliver appeared to read at least three separate AI prompts, including, “This version should…” and “Here’s a more developed and flowing version of the section…” before continuing with, “This section ends roughly…”

According to the National Post, neither Oliver nor anyone else in the chamber appeared to notice the blunder.

Even opposition lawmakers, who would typically seize on such mistakes, seemingly missed the AI prompts as they were read during the debate.

Although the speech was delivered on June 9, the clip only resurfaced weeks later after a Reddit user pointed out the mistake.

It has since gone viral, attracting millions of views across social media.

Beyond the accidental prompts, the speech itself displayed common signs of AI-generated writing, including repetitive language, generic bullet points, and lengthy explanations of basic civic concepts that lacked depth.

The irony was hard to miss, as Oliver was urging lawmakers to move beyond superficial political messaging while reading from an AI-generated script.

“Our duty is to look beyond the press release, beyond the talking points, and beyond the title of the bill itself,” he said.
