Portugal appoint Jorge Jesus as new head coach

Portugal have officially appointed Jorge Jesus as their new head coach, days after Roberto Martínez stepped down following the country’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the appointment in an official statement on Friday, ending speculation over who would succeed Martinez after Portugal’s 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain.

Martinez announced his departure after the World Cup loss, saying his contract had expired at the end of Portugal’s campaign.

Jesus, 71, takes charge of the national team after a long and successful managerial career, having previously coached Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting CP.

The veteran tactician arrives after guiding Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr to the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League title in his most recent coaching role.

He also enjoyed a productive working relationship with Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 29 goals in 33 appearances under Jesus at Al-Nassr last season.

Ronaldo, 41, confirmed the 2026 World Cup would be the last of his career, although the Portugal captain has yet to announce whether he will retire from international football.

The appointment completes Portugal’s swift managerial transition as the federation looks to rebuild following their disappointing World Cup campaign and begin preparations for the next international competitions under Jesus.
