VIDEO: Shoplifter in Kasarani blames evil spirits after being caught on camera

A woman who was caught shoplifting at a supermarket in Kasarani, Nairobi, puzzled residents after attributing her actions to alleged witchcraft.

In a viral clip seen by TNX Africa, the woman, dressed in a grey blouse and black trousers, is surrounded by several people questioning her. When asked her name and origin, she identifies herself as Purity from Kitui County.

Pressed on why she was stealing, she claims she believed evil spirits had possessed her.

“Nikama ni spirit nilitupiwa,” she says.

Another man asks whether she has parents, to which she responds that she does. He then asks how she intends to pay for the items she took.

“Uko na watu wanaweza kusaidia kulipa hizo vitu? Si ulipe hizo vitu uende?” he says.

Visibly worried, the woman says she has Sh600. As others urge her to pay, a female voice interjects, alleging that the woman has previously shoplifted at another supermarket in Kasarani.

“Anasema atalipa juu ako kwa camera. Huyu ni mwizi amekuja kuiba hapa supermarket na hii si siku ya kwanza,” she says.

Supermarket staff note that an employee’s salary had previously been deducted due to missing items.

“Nimeishi kukatwa mshahara juu yako,” a man says.

Throughout the exchange, the woman is seen holding soap, lotions, two packets of Royco cubes, and other sachet items.

“Watu hawawezi katwa pesa ujipake roll on, utumie Imperial Leather na Royco cubes,” the female voice adds.

The woman continues to blame evil spirits. One individual asks for her father’s phone number, which she provides, adding that he lives in Kariokor while she resides in Sunton, Kasarani.

The video has since drawn mixed reactions from Kenyans on social media.

On X, one user Joshua Mutahi wrote, “I would recommend displinary action but not too harsh like mob justice.”
