Police officers at Inuka Police Station in Likoni, Mombasa forced to cling to protective metal bars at the station after flood waters submerged the facility following heavy rains.

A video that has since gone viral on social media captures two police personnel seated on top of desks with their trousers folded up, shoeless.

As the video pans, the submerged cells are also captured, showing a dire situation.

Beneath the officers’ feet, plastic seats and stools are equally visibly submerged in the dirty water.

According to media reports online, several files and evidential materials were damaged when water flooded parts of the station during the rains, raising concerns over the handling of ongoing cases.

Sixteen suspects who had been in custody were reportedly moved to Shelly Beach Police Station as officers worked to secure the premises and salvage what they could.

As of today, mid-morning, efforts to drain the water and restore normal operations were ongoing at the station, which is located off the Likoni-Ukunda road.

Online, netizens did not hide their dismay.

“The irony of the name INUKA and its sunken in water,” joked one on Facebook.

The video comes amid heavy rainfall in Mombasa County, which has caused severe flooding in some parts of Mombasa.

The downpour, which lasted for several hours, resulted in water entering residential houses and rendering many roads impassable.

Consequently, several families were forced to abandon their homes, while others remained stranded as water levels continued to rise, with local residents expressing deep frustration, citing a long-standing lack of proper drainage infrastructure as the primary cause of the recurring crisis.
