Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, claimed the Vurugu Championship and a haul of prizes following his highly anticipated bout against Ferdinand Omondi, aka Mbavu Destroyer, at Kasarani Indoor Arena on Saturday, April 4.
Alongside the official championship belt, Majembe received Sh1,000,000 in cash and a Toyota Noah from betting company Odi Bets.
He also took home a Taro GP1 sport bike worth Sh385,000 and a free one-year gym membership.
Majembe secured a decisive win after landing a thunderous blow beneath Omondi’s belly, sending him crashing to the canvas.
The ringside medical team assessed Omondi, who soon signalled he could not continue. The referee stopped the fight, declaring Majembe the winner by Technical Knockout (TKO).
Reactions were mixed. Mbavu Destroyer shared a video being wheeled away in a wheelchair, claiming the blow was below the belt.
“Siku hizi boxing imekuwa kupigana njwang’a…Haina noma. Mngenishow si boxing, pia mimi nivuke na balls. This is not boxing,” he wrote on Instagram.
President William Ruto congratulated Majembe on X.
“Both of you put up a spirited fight, delivering an entertaining match that kept us on edge, too close to call. This match has reignited the passion for boxing across the country. We commit to sustaining this momentum by supporting the sport, investing in talent, and creating opportunities to grow boxing,” he said.
Geoffrey Mosiria, head of customer services in Nairobi County, alleged the event was scripted by media personality Oga Obinna to keep him out of the arrangement.
He claimed he had arranged professional trainers for Mbavu Destroyer, including one based in Dubai, and had paid for training and accommodation.
Oga Obinna dismissed the claims as false.
The fight continues to trend on social media, with memes and jokes about Mbavu Destroyer’s loss circulating widely.
On X, Junior Lebron James wrote, “Mbavu Destroyer has not accepted defeat. He says it was illegally won.”
Another user, George Diano, added, “Mbavu the Destroyer, who had been beating his chest like a malfunctioning drum, finally stepped into the ring only to get his software updated by force.”
