A 12,000 kg shipment of KitKat chocolate bars has gone missing in Europe, in one of the most daring heists in modern times.

Swiss food giant Nestlé confirmed on March 28 that a truck carrying over 413,000 units of its newest chocolate line was stolen while in transit, according to CBS News.

The theft occurred as the 12-ton cargo was being moved from a production facility in Central Italy to a distribution centre in Poland.

“We can confirm that 12T of KitKat products were stolen while in transit between our factory in Central Italy and their destination in Poland,” read a statement shared by the company on X.

Despite the planned route, the shipment never reached its destination, and both the vehicle and its contents remain unaccounted for.

Nestlé said the loss of such a large volume of product could affect retailers’ ability to stock shelves ahead of the Easter holiday season.

This, despite an assurance via the X post that there were no concerns for consumer safety, and the supply remains unaffected.

A KitKat spokesperson told AFP, “We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tons of our chocolate.”

The Swiss food giant added, “Investigations are ongoing in close collaboration with local authorities and our supply chain partner.”

Nestlé also told AFP that the missing chocolate could still be traced through the unique batch codes printed on every bar.

Each wrapper has its own number, allowing the company to track where the stolen goods may appear if sold in shops or online.

This makes it harder for thieves to sell the candy without being caught.
