ABAKALIKI — Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has cautioned 11,500 newly matriculated students of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) to avoid cultism, examination malpractice, and other social vices, warning that violations would attract expulsion.
The warning was issued during the 28th matriculation ceremony held at the university’s permanent site in Ezzangbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area over the weekend — the largest intake since the creation of the state in 1996.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang, Governor Nwifuru emphasized that his administration is committed to promoting quality education in the state. He highlighted interventions such as increased monthly subvention, salary increments for staff, infrastructure upgrades, and debt settlements aimed at restoring the university’s excellence.
“New students must focus on their studies, which is the primary purpose of being in the institution,” the governor said. “Any act capable of truncating their education will not be tolerated.”
The Vice Chancellor of EBSU, Prof. Michael Ugota, urged lecturers to dedicate themselves to educating and guiding students with integrity, while calling on students to uphold good character and reject behaviors that could damage their reputation or that of the university.
Prof. Ugota assured students that the university has eradicated cultism and other social vices on campus. He also highlighted efforts to end examination malpractice, sexual harassment, and extortion, emphasizing that adherence to rules and ethical standards is mandatory.
He further revealed that five out of seven programs recently reviewed have received full accreditation, and noted that the university is now fully digitalized, allowing students to access programs and pay fees online.
Prof. Ugota concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to academic excellence and commended Governor Nwifuru for prioritizing education in the state, noting that the investment in the university would yield long-term benefits.
