Kenyan pharmacist faces backlash after allegedly giving baby skin cream instead of eye drops

A Kenyan pharmacist facing backlash after allegedly dispensing skin cream instead of prescribed eye drops, causing potential harm to a baby’s eye in confrontation video that has gone viral.

The mother applied the skin product to her child’s eye for days, noticing no improvement and worsening symptoms, before checking the prescription herself. She confronted the chemist, who admitted the mistake, claiming she mistakenly thought it was for skin rather than eyes.

This comes just days after a nurse in Kisii is under investigation for breaching patient privacy by recording former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua buying medicine.

A viral video captured the nurse filming Gachagua in a pharmacy, prompting the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) President Dr. Wairimu Mbogo to condemn it on February 26 as a violation of confidentiality.

The PSK launched a formal investigation, which may result in disciplinary actions like license suspension. Mbogo stressed the need for qualified professionals upholding ethical standards in healthcare.

Dr. Mbogo further emphasised the broader implications, stating, “This incident reflects ethical gaps in our healthcare system and the critical importance of ensuring pharmacy outlets operate under qualified, licensed professionals who uphold standards.
