For fasting to be accepted, it must be observed with both sincerity and correct knowledge. One of the most important areas every fasting Muslim must understand is what vitiates or nullifies fasting, so that worship is not unknowingly rendered invalid.
Allah clearly defines the time and limits of fasting when He says: “And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night, then complete the fast until sunset.”
(Qur’an 2:187)
From this verse, scholars agree that intentional eating or drinking after dawn nullifies the fast. This includes any substance deliberately taken into the body through the mouth or nose. Similarly, deliberate sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan completely breaks the fast and carries a severe expiation.
Another nullifier is intentional ejaculation through direct stimulation. However, involuntary discharge during sleep does not invalidate the fast. Intentional vomiting also nullifies fasting, as the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said: “Whoever vomits intentionally must make up the fast, but whoever is overcome by vomiting does not have to make it up.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)
For women, menstruation and postnatal bleeding immediately invalidate the fast, even if they begin moments before sunset. Such fasts must be made up later, as instructed by Islamic law.
However, Islam is merciful and realistic. Actions done out of forgetfulness, such as eating or drinking unintentionally, do not invalidate fasting. The Prophet (s.a.w) said: “Whoever forgets while he is fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for Allah has fed him and given him drink.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
As a guide, fasting Muslims should seek knowledge, avoid doubtful actions, and refrain from risky behavior that could compromise their fast. Avoid unnecessary arguments, careless habits, and misinformation about fasting rules.
Understanding what nullifies fasting preserves not only the validity of the fast but also its reward. Knowledge safeguards worship, and sincere fasting combined with correct practice earns Allah’s acceptance.
