Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama is in deep grief following the sudden death of her only son, Moses Muthama.
Moses collapsed at home after experiencing breathing complications and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The tragedy comes barely three years after the Senator buried her daughter, Janet Njoki. His body has been taken to Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home as the family awaits post-mortem examinations.
“Moses developed breathing problems while at his house and was rushed to the hospital, where he died,” a family spokesperson confirmed.
Moses, who was appointed a director in Machakos County in January 2024, oversaw general administrative functions and coordinated activities across directorates.
His appointment sparked debates over potential conflicts of interest and political favouritism, with some residents questioning whether Senator Kavindu could be compromised.
His untimely death has prompted condolences from leaders and Kenyans across the country. Kitui Senator Enock Wambua and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti were among the top officials who sent messages of support.
Governor Ndeti said, “My heartfelt condolences to Machakos Senator Hon. Agnes Kavindu Muthama and her family following the untimely passing of her beloved son, Moses Muthama. May the Lord grant Moses eternal rest and give the family the courage to bear this great loss. Our prayers are with you.”
Other leaders and members of the public also expressed sympathy, praying and sending comfort to the family.
Moses was the only child of Senator Kavindu and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama. Johnson Muthama served as Machakos Senator from 2013 to 2017 and previously represented Kangundo Constituency in Parliament after winning the 2007 elections on an ODM Kenya ticket.
Senator Agnes Kavindu began her political journey in 2017, contesting the Machakos County Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, but lost.
She later won the Machakos Senate seat in a 2021 by-election following the death of Boniface Kabaka and successfully defended her seat in the 2022 general election under the Wiper Democratic Movement, becoming the fourth woman elected to the Senate since its establishment.
