Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has blocked CNN journalist Larry Madowo on X amid a public online feud that has been brewing for some time.
The move came after Madowo highlighted and reported on Muhoozi’s controversial posts, including threats directed at Uganda’s opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and his National Unity Platform (NUP) party.
The journalist publicly reacted to being blocked, writing: “Muhoozi used to follow me, now he’s blocked me. I wonder why,” a comment that further fuelled widespread reactions across Kenya, Uganda and East Africa more broadly.
The dispute traces back to the aftermath of Uganda’s recent general elections, which were followed by allegations of electoral malpractice. During that period, Muhoozi posted a series of inflammatory messages on X, vowing to “remove and extinguish” the NUP and labelling its supporters as terrorists.
While covering the story from Nairobi, Madowo quoted the posts highlighting the threats against Bobi Wine, who at the time said he feared for his safety, with reports that his home was under heavy security presence.
Muhoozi dismissed Madowo’s reporting, accusing him of bias and using profanities. In response, Madowo challenged the general, posting: “Why are you bragging about killing Ugandans who support the opposition? Is it because you’re protected by your father?”
Muhoozi’s history of provocative and incendiary posts on social media has repeatedly sparked debate and speculation about his political ambitions and intentions.
