Cameron Robins of The One & Only

The One & Only is a Burlington-based Canadian prank brand creating prank mail, gag gifts, novelty stickers, fake product labels and personalized hockey pucks designed to give people a memorable laugh. We spoke with founder Cameron Robins to learn more about the business, its inspiration and what goes into creating a uniquely Canadian prank experience.

The One & Only

What is your business called and what does it do?

The One & Only is a Canadian prank brand based in Burlington. We create prank mail, gag gifts, fake product labels, novelty stickers and The Puck Drop, a real hockey puck mailed with a custom message. We ship across Canada and the United States.

What made you want to do this work?

After Jenn’s cancer diagnosis and successful treatment, we began rethinking what we wanted the next chapter of our lives to look like. She did not want to return to a stressful job, and we wanted to build something creative together that gave people more reasons to laugh. We started with funny stickers, remembered a prank product I had once ordered from the United States, and realized Canada needed a prank mail company of its own.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

There were very few good Canadian options for prank mail and memorable gag gifts. Ordering from the United States often meant higher shipping costs, longer delivery times and products that did not feel particularly Canadian. We wanted to create funny, well-presented novelty products that are easy to order, harmless to receive and memorable enough to become a story people keep telling.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Our customers are adults shopping for funny gifts and pranks for friends, family members, partners and coworkers. Canada is our primary market, and we also ship to the United States. Some customers want a clean, easy laugh, while others prefer our more outrageous adult-humour products.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

We are an online retail business. Customers choose a prank or novelty product on TheOneAndOnly.ca, add personalization where available and provide the recipient’s address. We prepare the package and ship it directly, with tracking included and no purchaser details placed inside the package.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

The business is operated from Burlington, Ontario, and customers can find us online. We do not currently have a retail storefront. Our products are shipped directly to customers and recipients across Canada and the United States.

The One & Only

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

The best question is: What exactly will the recipient receive, and will my information appear inside the package? A good prank company should explain the product clearly, package it professionally and protect the purchaser’s privacy. At The One & Only, our product pages set clear expectations, tracking is included, and purchaser details are not placed inside the package.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is hearing about the reactions. Customers send us photos and stories about friends and family members laughing, calling around in confusion or sharing the prank with everyone they know. I also love that Jenn and I are building something creative together. The hardest part is managing all the small details of an online business while making sure every joke stays fun, responsible and well executed.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

We sell professionally packaged bad ideas, and somehow Canada Post has become our business partner.
