Vivo Energy Kenya has condemned a viral incident showing a motorist spraying petrol onto his vehicle at a Shell service station in Nairobi, warning that the reckless conduct posed a serious threat to public safety.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the company said it was aware of footage circulating on social media showing a man using a fuel nozzle to spray petrol over a vehicle at its Shell Westview service station.

The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Wednesday, October 28, with the video capturing the man directing fuel onto the exterior of a parked car as another individual stood nearby.

The footage sparked widespread reactions online, with Kenyans expressing concern over the potential dangers of mishandling highly flammable fuel at a petrol station.

Vivo Energy, which markets and distributes Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in Kenya, strongly condemned the behaviour, describing it as irresponsible, reckless and negligent.

“We strongly condemn this act of irresponsible, reckless and negligent conduct. Such behaviour poses a serious risk to public safety and endangers people’s lives,” the company said.

The company further insisted that safety remains its highest priority, adding that the behaviour captured in the video did not reflect the standards expected at its service stations.

Vivo Energy also confirmed that it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that the retailer operating the station had reported the matter to the relevant authorities for investigation and necessary action.

“We take this matter seriously and are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Our retailer immediately reported it to the relevant authorities for investigation and necessary action,” the statement added.

The company said it was also reinforcing safety requirements across its network to ensure that established standards were consistently maintained.

It thanked members of the public who raised concerns after the video went viral, assuring customers of its continued commitment to maintaining safety across its outlets.

Meanwhile, the incident attracted criticism from social media users, some of whom called for disciplinary action against both the motorist and the petrol station attendant who was on duty.

Some questioned how the motorist was allowed to handle the fuel nozzle in such a manner, arguing that the attendant should also be held accountable for failing to intervene and prevent the potentially dangerous act.

The incident has renewed conversations about safety compliance at petrol stations and the responsibility of motorists and attendants to observe established precautions when handling fuel.
