A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a heavy wooden crucifix fell on him during a church service that was being livestreamed.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), was leading Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil when the cross behind him suddenly came loose.
Around 27 minutes into the broadcast, the fixture detached from the wall and fell forward, striking the priest on the head.
The livestream captured the moment the crucifix fell, shocking worshippers inside the church and viewers watching online.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Father Molinari succumbed to his injuries.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death in an official statement.
“We inform you that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory,” the statement read.
Church leaders expressed solidarity with Father Molinari’s family and congregation, calling on the faithful to pray for his eternal rest.
Parishioners have also mourned the priest, describing him as a devoted spiritual guide who was committed to serving his community.
Meanwhile, authorities and church leaders are investigating the incident to establish how the heavy wooden cross became detached from the wall.
They have yet to determine whether structural damage, faulty installation or another factor caused it to fall.
The church is expected to announce details of memorial services and funeral arrangements in the coming days.
