Residents attending the first anniversary commemoration of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, have demanded answers over the whereabouts and health of his elder brother, Oburu Odinga.
A section of attendees was captured chanting “Oburu!” during Thursday’s gathering, calling for an update on the condition of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, who was notably absent from the event honouring his younger brother.
The chants came amid growing public interest in Oburu’s health and his absence from recent family and party engagements.
His absence had also attracted attention during the commissioning of Raila’s mausoleum in Bondo, which brought together members of the Odinga family, close associates, national leaders and other invited guests.
Ahead of the first anniversary celebrations, reports indicated that Oburu would not attend, with Kisii Governor Simba Arati expected to read his speech on his behalf.
As questions over his whereabouts persist, ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo’s assurance on his condition remains the latest public update.
Speaking to The Standard Digital on Tuesday, Omanyo dismissed concerns circulating on social media, saying Oburu was well and expected to return home soon.
“He is fine. It is unfortunate, what I have seen on social media. Those people seeking to have more likes or views will be disappointed because he is up, he is well. In fact, he will be headed home either today or tomorrow,” Omanyo said
