A Kenyan woman confronted a fellow church member during her mother’s burial, accusing her of demanding rent from the deceased while she was critically ill in hospital.

The emotional confrontation involving Sarah Nunu happened during the burial of her mother, Pastor Martha Sayo Nunu, after Sarah spotted the woman among the mourners.

According to Sarah, her mother was receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital and was too weak to operate her phone, forcing her to take over its management during the hospitalisation.

She said it was during this period that she received a message from a woman she identified as a fellow church member, demanding payment of rent for church premises.

Sarah said she was surprised by the request given her mother’s condition but still asked whether her mother had money that could be used to settle the amount.

“She is admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital, she can’t even wake up,” Sarah said, recalling the circumstances surrounding the message.

She further claimed that the woman never visited her mother during her hospitalisation, despite knowing she was unwell.

“I’m shocked to see her here pretending to cry. Why are you crying?”

Seeing her at the burial appeared to reopen the painful experience, with Sarah questioning why she had attended the funeral after allegedly failing to visit the deceased while she was sick.

“I’m shocked to see her, pretending to cry. Why are you crying?” Sarah questioned, urging people to make a habit of checking on others when they are sick rather than only appearing at their funerals.

She also questioned how the woman could afford to travel to the burial but allegedly could not make a short visit to see her mother.

“Uliweza kulipa fare ya kukuja hapa, but you couldn’t visit my mum, hata ya 100 bob,” she said.

The confrontation comes shortly after another burial-related incident involving Kenyan content creator Lyndah Kebati, who publicly confronted relatives during the burial of her father, Bosco Kebati, in Nyamira.

Lyndah accused members of her father’s first family of sidelining her mother, Angelica Akinyi, and their family during the funeral arrangements.

Her claims were disputed by a relative from the first family, who shared a copy of the funeral eulogy and claimed that Lyndah and her family had been included. The relative also alleged that the first family had cared for Bosco during his illness.

The two incidents have sparked online discussions about disagreements emerging publicly during funerals.

Some users joked that people may now think twice before attending burials, fearing they could be confronted over unresolved grievances.

One user, @DAWA YANGU, wrote: “Mimi sahii siwezi enda burial yoyote, wanaweza nipasha na huko sitaki.”

Others praised the younger generation for openly addressing grievances rather than remaining silent.
