Footage showing a young woman falling from a moving matatu, popularly known as a ‘nganya’, as it performed stunts during its launch in Nairobi has sparked concern over road safety.
In the clip seen by TNX Africa, the orange vehicle, decorated with graffiti, is seen making rounds as several young people cling to its sides.
The ‘nganya’ hoots as the individuals cheer the dangerous stunt performed at a gas station.
As the vehicle makes a turn, a young woman falls onto the road. Several men rush to help her up before the matatu turns back to the same spot.
Although authorities did not comment or confirm any injuries from the incident, such reckless stunts have repeatedly been criticised by Kenyans on social media.

The incident comes after graphic footage circulating online renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement. The video shows a man being run over by a reversing Nairobi matatu.
In the footage, the victim is seen hanging from the side of the moving public service vehicle, a risky stunt frequently performed by touts, before losing his grip, falling onto the tarmac and being crushed beneath the tyres.
The disturbing incident sparked widespread outrage online, with citizens calling on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to take decisive legal action.
Some demanded the immediate revocation of the driver’s licence and formal criminal prosecution.
Despite the public outcry, transport regulatory bodies have yet to issue an official statement on the investigation or the victim’s current medical condition.
The latest incident highlights growing safety concerns in Nairobi’s public transport sector, coming weeks after a medical student died in Kasarani after allegedly being ejected from a moving vehicle during a minor fare dispute.
That case has already led to court proceedings, with transport company officials facing charges of attempting to conceal the vehicle involved and helping the crew evade law enforcement.
While customised nganyas remain a celebrated hallmark of Nairobi’s vibrant street culture because of their elaborate artwork and music systems, the latest incident underscores the risks posed by reckless crew conduct and inadequate traffic oversight.
