Apple has officially classified the iPhone X and the 15-inch MacBook Pro released in 2018 as obsolete, ending official hardware servicing and parts distribution for both devices.
The technology giant updated its public vintage and obsolete products support documentation, moving the two models from its secondary support tier to the obsolete category.
Under Apple’s policy, a product is considered obsolete when the company stopped distributing it for sale more than seven years ago. According to the company’s support terms, “Apple discontinues all hardware service for obsolete products, with no exceptions for service providers. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.”
The iPhone X, launched in November 2017 to mark the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone, introduced a major redesign by removing the physical Home button and introducing Face ID.
It featured an edge-to-edge OLED display with a camera notch, a design that went on to define subsequent generations of iPhones.
The model was discontinued in September 2018 following the launch of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR.
Also affected by the update is the 15-inch MacBook Pro from 2018. The laptop was part of Apple’s Intel-powered professional range before the company transitioned its Mac lineup to custom Apple Silicon chips.
The 2018 MacBook Pro was notably the first MacBook Pro to feature Apple’s T2 security chip and included the butterfly keyboard mechanism, which Apple covered under a dedicated repair programme until 2024.
The obsolete status does not mean the devices will suddenly stop functioning. Users can continue operating them as long as the hardware and software remain usable. However, official repairs and replacement parts are no longer available through Apple or Apple Authorised Service Providers, leaving users dependent on third-party repair shops.
Software support is also limited. The iPhone X cannot be updated beyond iOS 16, while the 2018 MacBook Pro is capped at macOS Sequoia.
The move marks the end of official support for two products that played significant roles in shaping Apple’s hardware direction over the past decade.
