Mombasa chef Yusuf Garani has made history after finishing a demanding 130-hour barbecue marathon at Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa.

His effort was aimed at breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest barbecue session, and he has now gone beyond the previous mark.

The cooking marathon started on August 2, 2026, and went on nonstop until August 8, 2026. During this period, Garani stayed at the grill day and night, following strict rules set for such record attempts.

Officials and supporters were present to monitor the process and make sure every requirement was met.

Before Garani’s challenge, the record belonged to South African chef Gielie Basson, who had grilled for 98 hours and 8 minutes.

Garani’s target was to reach 130 hours of continuous grilling, a huge jump from the previous time. By completing all 130 hours, he has successfully gone past Basson’s achievement and set a new standard for barbecue endurance.

The event took place at Swahilipot Hub, a popular creative and cultural space in Mombasa that often hosts community activities and talent showcases.

Garani’s marathon attracted attention from locals, fellow chefs, and online audiences, many of whom followed his progress and celebrated his strength and dedication.

Although the record still needs formal confirmation from Guinness World Records, Garani has already become a source of pride for Mombasa and Kenya. His 130-hour grilling challenge showcased strong discipline.
