Kenyan basketball sensation Madina Okot has reached another major career milestone after signing with Australia’s Tasmania Jewels ahead of the upcoming Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) season.
The club confirmed Okot as its second import and final signing for its inaugural campaign, with the deal subject to league approval.
The move follows a series of standout performances that have seen the towering centre attract attention from clubs beyond Africa.
The latest achievement comes just months after Okot made history by becoming one of the first Kenyan women to be selected in the WNBA Draft.
She was picked 13th overall, cementing her place among the country’s fastest-rising basketball stars.
Hailing from Kakamega County, Okot began her basketball journey in 2020. Standing at 6ft 6in (198cm), her height and skill have propelled her onto the international stage in just a few years.
In 2022, she represented Kenya’s Under-23 team, helping the side win the FIBA 3×3 Nations League Africa in Nairobi and secure qualification for the World Cup in Romania.
The same year, she made her senior national 3×3 debut at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, marking another important step in her career.
Her move to the WNBL is not only a personal achievement but also a significant moment for Kenyan women’s basketball, reflecting the growing recognition of the country’s talent on the global stage.
Tasmania Jewels will be hoping Okot’s presence strengthens their squad as they prepare to compete in one of the world’s most competitive women’s basketball leagues.
Speaking after being recognised as the Most Promising Sportswoman at the 2022 Kenya Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA), Okot reflected on representing Kenya on the global stage.
“This is not just for me. This is for all of us and I’m carrying our flag to the next level with pride. I hope this helps them see that we belong on any stage”, she said.
Her journey from local courts in Kakamega to professional basketball abroad continues to inspire a new generation of Kenyan athletes dreaming of competing at the highest level.
