Late Ohangla musician Tony Ndiema’s final farewell was marred by chaotic scenes after mourners were pushed and hurried through the body viewing, sparking criticism over the handling of the ceremony.

A viral video circulating online shows security personnel struggling to control large crowds as hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to the late Ohangla musician ahead of his burial.

The overwhelming turnout appeared to overwhelm organisers, resulting in pushing and confusion as mourners scrambled for a final glimpse of the singer’s body.

The incident triggered widespread debate on social media, with many Kenyans arguing that the celebrated musician deserved a more orderly and dignified send-off.

“Wacheni kuskuma watu hivo,” one mourner is heard saying in the video, criticising security officers for the way mourners were handled.

Despite the commotion, fans continued to celebrate Ndiema’s contribution to the growth of Ohangla music, remembering him as one of the genre’s most influential performers.

Fellow musicians also paid tribute, reflecting on his impact on Kenya’s music industry.

“From the same music industry where dreams were nurtured. From the same grounds of toil where laughter once echoed. This evening we stand united in silence, bound not by festivity but by great loss,” said Ohangla and Afro-Rhumba musician Prince Indah.

He described Ndiema’s death as a major loss to the industry.

“On behalf of myself, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences on the passing of our brother, Tony Ndiema,” said fellow musician Emma Jalamo, adding that his death was a loss not only to his family but to the entire music fraternity and everyone whose lives he touched through his music.

Ndiema was renowned for his unique blend of traditional Ohangla rhythms and contemporary Rhumba influences, earning a loyal following as a vocalist and bandleader.

He died on June 30, 2026, after a short illness, leaving behind a musical legacy that continues to inspire fans and fellow artistes.
