A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dr Chike Okogwu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to focus more on addressing Nigeria’s pressing economic and social challenges rather than engaging in political battles.
The ADC National Leader of Persons with Disabilities made the call in a statement on Saturday while reacting to the President’s recent comments on political competition, saying the Federal Government should prioritise policies that directly improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
According to him, rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity and the increasing cost of living remain the most urgent issues confronting citizens and deserve the administration’s full attention.
“Mr. President should concern himself less with wrestling political opponents and more with wrestling inflation, hunger, insecurity and unemployment.
“These are the real challenges confronting Nigerians,” he said.
The ADC chieftain also drew attention to the plight of Persons with Disabilities, saying many still face barriers to healthcare, education, transportation, employment and other essential public services despite existing legal protections.
He called on the Federal Government and state governments to fully implement the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act and adopt policies that promote inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
“Disability inclusion should not be treated as charity but as a constitutional right and a development priority. No Nigerian should be left behind,” he said.
Okogwu said the ADC remained committed to policies that support accessible infrastructure, quality education, improved healthcare, employment opportunities and increased participation of Persons with Disabilities in governance.
He added that the true measure of leadership lies in the positive impact made on the lives of citizens.
“History celebrates leaders who reduce poverty, strengthen institutions, protect the vulnerable and unite their people,” he noted.
His remarks come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties intensifying criticism of the Tinubu administration over the country’s economic situation while the Presidency has continued to defend its reforms, insisting they are necessary to stabilise the economy and deliver long-term growth.
