KWS issues warning after hyena sighting in Syokimau

The Kenya Wildlife Service has issued a public advisory urging residents of Syokimau and surrounding areas to remain vigilant following reports of a hyena sighting in the neighbourhood.

Response operations are currently ongoing after the animal was spotted on Sunday along Mwananchi Road, off Eastport Drive.

Although a dispatched Problem Animal Control team did not locate the predator directly, they confirmed its recent movement through fresh footprints found on the ground.

“KWS wishes to assure the public that all necessary precautionary measures are being undertaken and there is no cause for panic,” the service stated in a public notice.

Preliminary monitoring indicates the hyena is moving through bushy, isolated land behind Jomo Kenyatta International Airport toward the Katani area.

KWS has since intensified ground surveillance to manage the situation and safeguard both human life and wildlife.

Authorities have advised locals to avoid approaching or provoking the animal if they encounter it.

The agency cautioned residents to ensure that children are kept under close supervision at all times to prevent potential attacks, emphasising the importance of immediate reporting, asking the public to contact the nearest KWS station or local authorities if they spot the animal.

A 24-hour toll-free support line at 0800 597 000 has also been provided for emergency assistance.
