An online debate erupted after a viral video exposed the dilapidated state of Kimalel Health Centre in Baringo South, Baringo County.
In the clip seen by TNX Africa, Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and other members of the Senate Health Committee toured the facility, expressing shock at the poor conditions.
Throughout the hospital, the ceiling was destroyed, and a hospital worker told the senators that the roof was infested with snakes that occasionally fall.
“This is unbelievable. Chair, the lady who was showing me around said that there are snakes which fall when they are working here,” the Kisii senator said, holding his cheeks in disbelief.

Senate Health Committee chair Mandago asked a hospital official about this, who replied: “Actually, there is a lot of leakage in the roof plus the termites which destroy it.”
Citing the state of the roof, Onyonka questioned the amount of money the county receives from the national government, saying it should be enough to support the hospital’s infrastructure.
“This thing cannot even take Sh10 million to do a roof. How can that be?” Onyonka said.
Mandago noted that while the hospital looked impressive from the outside, the interior told a different story.

“This was a very beautiful place. The building is just so nice. What exactly happened to this place?” he said.
Onyonka added that the facility was built during former President Daniel arap Moi’s regime, terming its current state a shame.
“This was President Moi’s project. He did some of these in Kisii. They are exactly same material even the design. If Mzee wakes up, he would be shocked. What is wrong with us,” he said.
As the tour continued, Onyonka questioned the area’s leadership.

“Chair, this place is supposed to have a governor?”
Mandago, pointing to more worn-out ceilings, responded: “Leave this alone, let me show you another one.”
The team then moved to the theatre room, where they found an even worse situation, with broken cabinets, hospital beds and equipment left in reckless abandonment.
The tour sparked varied reactions online.
