Rising insecurity in Nairobi has sparked online debate after CCTV footage captured a man stealing from a restaurant in Lavington.

In the clip seen by TNX Africa, the suspect, whose face was clearly visible and uncovered, used a phone flashlight to scan the room before selecting from a range of liquor bottles neatly arranged on a table. After briefly inspecting the options, he picked two bottles and exited.

The viral video drew mixed reactions from Kenyans online. Some questioned whether the man was a thief, while others called for urgent government action over growing insecurity in the capital.

On X, Guka wa Gutagwanyi wrote, “Hakuna mwizi huwa na this type of confidence. Yaani ako hadi na time ya kuchagua liqour bana.” Another user, Shifo, added, “It’s time raia tuamue, tuungane tujilinde sasa juu @PoliceKE @DCI_Kenya wamelala.”

Joe King George commented, “Interesting enough, he has a taste and it wasn’t random, it was very selective but didn’t carry everything.”

The April 13 footage comes amid a string of recent robbery incidents in Nairobi, including a major overnight break-in at Mr. Bingo’s Computers in the CBD.

The heist left shop owner Moses Mwangi counting losses of over Sh16 million after thieves made off with high-end electronics. CCTV footage seen by TNX Africa shows the operation was carefully planned, beginning before the suspects entered the building.

Cameras at Twiga Towers first captured a man, believed to be the ringleader, casually engaging security guards in conversation moments before the incident. The interaction appeared normal, raising no suspicion.

About an hour later, the situation shifted as the guards appeared disoriented and possibly intoxicated before losing consciousness. The suspect was later seen carrying one of the incapacitated guards out of the premises.

According to local reports, the robbery occurred at around 1:00am, with the suspects taking just 12 minutes to breach the store’s reinforced doors.

Once inside, the three thieves systematically packed items, removing expensive computers from their boxes to maximise space. They stole over 500 laptops, more than 100 phones, mainly iPhones, and other high-value electronics.

The stolen goods were loaded into large sacks and transported to a getaway vehicle waiting nearby. The gang remained at the scene until after 3:00am, leaving only after stripping the store of its most valuable stock.

Police from Central Police Station are now using the high-quality CCTV footage to track down the suspects.

Speaking to Citizen TV, an emotional Mwangi lamented the loss. “This was my dream. All gone.”

Fighting back tears, he displayed empty boxes, noting the thieves had left behind only chargers for some of the stolen items. He added that many of the goods had been purchased on credit, leaving him heavily indebted.

“I have people’s money. I have Sh.16 million in debt. Yesterday, I had over twenty missed calls from concerned people asking, ‘will I get my money?’ Now, it’s gone,” Moses said tearfully.
