Footage of a male lion lying in the grass with severe abdominal injuries has sparked widespread attention on Kenyan social media and conservation communities.
The graphic video seen by TNX Africa shows the lion, believed to be Kiminati, weakly stretched out and breathing heavily at the Naboisho Conservancy in the Maasai Mara.
According to the original clip posted by professional safari guide SafariSteve, the lion is said to have sustained the injuries during a territorial fight with rival lions, though some observers suggested a failed hunt may also have been responsible.
The animal was seen with a torn abdomen, exposed organs and visible bite marks. However, the exact cause remains unconfirmed, and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has not issued a statement.
The footage triggered mixed reactions online, with conservation enthusiasts and social media users expressing shock and concern.
On X, Lion Lovers wrote, “Oh no!! Kiminati seen this morning with his intestines hanging out! The guide said his injury is from a territorial fight. @KWSKenya @SheldrickTrust this lion requires urgent attention, please!”
Another user added, “Kiminati! This is devastating to see. Wishing @KWSKenya and @SheldrickTrust every success in saving this majestic boy.”
SafariSteve also wrote on Instagram, “Kiminati is not just a lion to me, he is a presence I have followed, respected and felt deeply connected to. Seeing him injured in a territorial fight reminds me of how unforgiving the wild can be.”
The Kenya Wildlife Service is yet to make any formal comment on the matter.
