Supporters and residents heading to a rally by Rigathi Gachagua in Kikuyu Town are likely to face major traffic disruption after suspected groups of hired goons block key access roads, creating chaos and tension ahead of the event.
Reports indicate that sections of the Southern Bypass, particularly around Thogoto and Gitaru, were rendered impassable after individuals lit bonfires using burning tyres and strategically placed obstacles along the road.
Thick smoke from the fires reduced visibility, while abandoned trailers were used to physically barricade the highway, paralysing traffic flow to and from Kikuyu.
Motorists were left stranded as the disruption affected both private and public transport, with some forced to seek alternative routes or turn back altogether.
The situation significantly slowed down movement of people planning to attend the rally, as well as normal Saturday traffic in the busy corridor linking Nairobi to Kiambu.
The incident comes amid earlier warnings from Gachagua and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), who had alleged a coordinated scheme to interfere with the rally.
According to the claims, organised groups were allegedly mobilised to cause unrest, including vandalising businesses and provoking police intervention.
Part of the alleged plan, as raised by the DCP leader, involved blocking key roads using stalled vehicles to restrict access to the venue and expose supporters to potential attacks a scenario that appears to mirror the events witnessed on the ground.
The developments have heightened political tensions in the area, with concerns growing over the safety of residents, businesses, and rally attendees.
