Messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a new username feature that allows users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, according to Help Net Security.
After years of hacks, leaks, rumours and beta hints, the long-awaited feature is finally being introduced.
Owned by Meta, the app has been teasing the update since 2023, when tech analysts first spotted traces of the feature in its code, according to Yahoo Tech.
The rollout is being done in phases across Android and iOS, with the company aiming to ensure the feature is secure and resistant to abuse.
To access it, users can open the app, head to Settings and look for the new “Username” option, where they can create a unique handle.
Key guidelines include:
- Must contain at least one letter
- Only lowercase letters (a to z), numbers, periods and underscores are allowed
- No domain-style endings such as .com or .net
- No leading or trailing periods
- Must be between 3 and 30 characters
Once set, the username can be shared via a QR code or link, allowing others to start chats without needing a phone number.
The update is expected to improve privacy, particularly amid rising concerns over scam calls and online fraud.
While the wider rollout continues, beta users already have access, with the feature expected to reshape how people connect on the platform.
