The political scene is abuzz following a rare public meeting between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The two leaders came face to face at Njegas Primary School in Kirinyaga Central during the burial of former Senator Daniel Karaba, in a moment that quickly ignited speculation over the 2027 General Election.

Kenyatta was received by a host of opposition figures, including Martha Karua, Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i, and Gachagua himself, who now leads the DCP party.

Videos circulating online showed Kenyatta, dressed in black, warmly greeted by the leaders, with photographers scrambling to capture what many viewed as a symbolic political moment.

As the leaders made their way into the service tent, crowds erupted in cheers.

In one clip, Kenyatta and Gachagua were seen exchanging words before breaking into laughter, a striking scene given their recent political history.

The two later sat side by side during the service, alongside other opposition figures, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.

Online, Kenyans reacted swiftly to the encounter, reading between the lines of the leaders’ body language and timing.

“Nothing is coincidence in politics,” one user wrote on X.

“Kuna mahali chai inaonja muarubaine,” another joked.

Others urged a shift in focus from political symbolism to leadership substance, calling for accountability and reforms as the country charts its future.

The meeting marks a sharp contrast to the 2022 period when Gachagua, then Deputy President, was a vocal critic of Kenyatta, accusing him of sidelining Mt Kenya leaders and failing to support President William Ruto’s administration.

Following his 2024 impeachment and exit from the ruling coalition, Gachagua publicly apologised to Kenyatta, admitting his earlier approach was a political miscalculation.

He has since shifted from critic to ally, positioning their reconciliation as part of efforts to unite the Mt Kenya region.

Kenyatta has largely kept a low profile since leaving office, but has increasingly been linked to emerging opposition alignments ahead of 2027.

The reunion now adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape as alliances begin to form ahead of the next General Election.
