Chinese woman You Jianxia has been confirmed as the world record holder for the longest eyelash, measuring an astonishing 20.5 cm (8.0 inches).

According to Guinness World Records, she first earned the title in June 2016, when her left upper eyelash measured 12.4 cm (4.88 inches). A fresh measurement in May 2021 confirmed the new length, with the record-breaking lash still growing from her left upper eyelid.

Jianxia said she first noticed the unusual growth in 2015.

“I first realised that my eyelashes were growing in 2015. They continue to grow slowly, becoming longer and longer,” she told Guinness World Records.

She added that she consulted several medical professionals in search of an explanation, but none could provide a clear answer.

“I did visit medical professionals to find out why my eyelashes are longer than other people’s. The doctor couldn’t explain this and felt it was really amazing,” she said.

Despite exploring possible scientific explanations, including genetics, the cause of her unusually long eyelashes remains unknown. Jianxia noted that no one in her family shares the trait, suggesting it is not hereditary.

“I also tried to find scientific reasons such as genes or something else. However, none of my family have long eyelashes like me, so it can’t be explained,” she said.

With no medical explanation, Jianxia has turned to a more spiritual interpretation. She believes her eyelashes may be a gift linked to a period she once spent in the mountains.

“I kept thinking about why I have such long eyelashes, then I remembered that I had spent over 480 days in the mountain years ago. So I told myself that my eyelashes must be a gift given by the Buddha,” she said.

Beyond their length, she says the lashes give her a sense of inner strength and confidence.

“There might be some connection between my long eyelashes and a stronger body. I am in fair health now, but when I was born I was relatively weak. Now I feel quite good and many people think I look younger,” she said.

Despite their extraordinary size, Jianxia insists they do not interfere with her daily life.

“Thanks to my naturally long eyelashes, I don’t need to wear eyeshadow or eyeliner. They act like natural eyeliner. I find it easy to wash my face and go about my daily life. They fall out and grow again. Sometimes they break if you pull them carelessly, but it’s not an issue as they are still growing,” she said.

Her record has sparked mixed reactions online, with some users expressing disbelief while others responded with humour.
