Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga is blending grassroots mobilisation with calculated political signalling, as her recent activities in Kawangware point to an early push ahead of 2027.

Omanga stirred online buzz after sharing photos of herself distributing chicken and ugali to Nairobi residents at St. Anthony grounds, drawing large crowds and igniting debate across social media.

“Leo sapa ni KUKU UGALI NA MAMA MIRADI hapa St. Anthony, Kawangware. Kesho nikuje wapi? #MamaNairobi #MamaNairobi,” she posted.

The outreach, which saw long queues of residents turn up, was framed by supporters as a demonstration of people-centred politics and direct engagement with constituents.

Critics, however, questioned whether such initiatives amount to sustainable empowerment or populist optics aimed at voter influence.

Online, Kenyans had mixed reactions, some noting the earnestness with which the 2027 battles have begun.

“Sahi najua unaweza niskiza lakini ukipata kiti utapotea,” wrote one on Facebook.

“How do you intend to recover your money after election ndio the elephant in the room. After Leo Kesho na siku zingine watakula wapi, politics of tokenism should be condemned,” another wrote on X.

“Let us not normalize poverty. You can literally start a program of building good houses for these folks and starting businesses for them that can help most of the community.
They will be more happy for that badala ya kuku na unga,” lectured another.

Beyond the food drive, Omanga’s political repositioning is becoming increasingly apparent.

She recently joined the Democracy for Citizens Party, a formation associated with former DP Rigathi Gachagua, signalling a shift in allegiance and a recalibration of her political strategy ahead of the polls.

She has also thrown her weight behind James Gakuya in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, as she eyes the Woman Representative seat in what is shaping up to be a competitive contest against controversial Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu.
