A police officer has won widespread praise online after risking his safety to help rescue victims of a grisly road accident along the Kegati–Keroka Highway.

The officer, identified as Derrick Oguok, was among the first responders at the chaotic scene, where several people were trapped following a devastating crash.

According to witnesses, Oguok worked tirelessly in heavy mud and difficult weather conditions, helping pull injured victims from the wreckage while also assisting in the recovery of those who had tragically lost their lives.

The accident left two people dead and seven others injured. Survivors; some in critical condition — were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

Reports indicate the crash occurred after a trailer lost control and rammed into a group of boda boda riders who had stopped along the roadside.

Witnesses said the heavy vehicle appeared to be experiencing mechanical problems before veering off the road and ploughing into the riders and passengers.

Emergency responders and local residents quickly converged at the scene to assist with the rescue mission.

Photos widely shared on Facebook showed Officer Oguok drenched in mud, with his uniform and boots completely covered as he focused on pulling victims to safety.

Social media users say beyond his own efforts, the officer also distributed gloves to members of the public so they could safely join in the rescue work.

One user, Obura Ke, praised the officer’s approach, writing: “He did not stop citizens from helping. In fact, he brought gloves and handed them to those nearby so they could safely join in the rescue efforts. Truly, I recognize him as a hero.”

However, not everyone saw the act as extraordinary. Another user, Sammy Sms, argued that the officer was simply performing the duty he was trained for.

“He was on his duty and what he did was the reason he went for training, so nothing else he deserves other than being paid his monthly salary on time,” the user commented.

Still, for many Kenyans online, Officer Oguok’s muddy uniform and relentless effort at the crash scene symbolised a rare moment of dedication and humanity in the face of tragedy.
