In the fast-moving world of entertainment, where trends shift overnight and audiences constantly demand something new, few DJs manage to build careers defined by both longevity and reinvention.

For DJ Dreezy, born Stephen Macharia, the journey has been exactly that: a steady rise from Nairobi’s nightlife scene to national radio, with his sights now set on regional recognition.

For more than a decade, Dreezy has quietly built a reputation as one of Kenya’s most versatile DJs.

Now part of the talent roster at the Standard Media Group, where he spins live on Radio Maisha, his ambitions stretch beyond the country’s borders.

“Music is a language that connects people instantly,” he says. “My dream is to keep pushing my craft until I can represent Kenya as one of the best DJs in East Africa.”

Dreezy’s career began in 2013 within Nairobi’s highly competitive entertainment circuit. At the time, clubs and events were packed with aspiring DJs hoping to break through. For the young Macharia, success required discipline, patience and relentless practice.

Rather than limiting himself to a single genre, he developed an open-format style that blends Afrobeats, Amapiano, hip-hop, EDM, R&B and classic hits into energetic, crowd-driven sets.

“The secret is reading the room,” he explains. “A DJ is not just playing music; he is telling a story with sound.”

His big break came when he began performing opening sets for veteran Kenyan DJ DJ Crème De La Crème, an experience that exposed him to large audiences and major events.

“Opening for big DJs teaches you discipline,” Dreezy says. “You learn timing, crowd psychology and how to build energy without rushing the moment.”

Over the years, he has performed at high-profile events including Safaricom Live and Safaricom Blaze, sharing stages with leading entertainers across East Africa. His work also spans weddings, corporate events, club nights and private functions — spaces that demand adaptability and professionalism.

“Different audiences require different energies,” he says. “A corporate event is not the same as a festival, but the goal is always the same — to create a memorable moment.”

His move to radio marked another milestone. On Radio Maisha, Dreezy now connects with listeners across Kenya through curated live mixes that reach far beyond club walls.

Recognition has followed. This year he earned a nomination for Radio Deejay of the Year – East Africa at the E360 Awards, highlighting his growing influence in the regional music scene.

For Dreezy, however, the nomination is only another step in a larger journey.

“The dream is bigger than awards,” he says. “It’s about flying the Kenyan flag high and showing that our DJs can compete with the best in the region.”
