Kenyan distance runner Doris Lemngole has etched her name in history after clinching The Bowerman, the highest individual honour in US collegiate track and field.

The University of Alabama standout becomes the first athlete from the institution to win the prestigious award, triumphing over a strong field of finalists that included Pamela Kosgei of New Mexico and Savannah Sutherland of Michigan, according to Alabama Athletics.

Hailing from West Pokot, Lemngole enjoyed a sensational season, capturing two national titles and setting new collegiate records in the 5,000m and the steeplechase.

Her dominance on the track extended beyond the United States after she placed fifth globally at the World Championships, underlining her status as one of the world’s elite distance runners.

Away from competition, Lemngole also excelled academically. She was named Academic All America Team Member of the Year, a testament to her discipline in balancing sport and studies.

Her victory further cements the Southeastern Conference’s grip on collegiate track and field. Lemngole is the sixth female athlete from the SEC to win The Bowerman in the last seven years, joining a distinguished list that includes Parker Valby of Florida, Abby Steiner of Kentucky, Athing Mu of Texas A&M, Sha’Carri Richardson of LSU and Keturah Orji of Georgia.

The Bowerman is widely regarded as the pinnacle award in college athletics, reserved for the most outstanding male and female track and field athletes each year.

Back home, Kenyans took to social media to celebrate her achievement.
