Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba was among legislators who attended the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party’s National Governing Council (NGC) meeting held at State House, Nairobi.

Wamuchomba, once a fierce critic of sections of the ruling party, was seen seated among other lawmakers, including newly elected Malava MP David Ndakwa in the meeting chaired by President William Ruto.

Her appearance at the high-level engagement comes just hours after she publicly accused allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of orchestrating chaos during a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County.

In a series of sarcastic remarks, Wamuchomba questioned the narrative surrounding the incident, asking in Swahili, “Ndio kurudi mtaa. Ati kulienda aje huko Othaya? Simon Makonde was abducted saa ngapi? Akaachiliwa saa ngapi?”

She further alleged that the unrest was deliberately staged to attract sympathy and possibly justify asylum claims, claiming some individuals were financially strained and seeking to sustain what she described as “hatred campaigns.”

The chaotic incident occurred on Sunday at St Peter’s African Church of Kenya (ACK) in Witima, where a service attended by Gachagua was disrupted after a teargas canister was reportedly thrown into the congregation.

Worshippers were forced to flee in panic, while several vehicles parked within the church compound were vandalised.

Authorities later confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The disruption sparked national outrage and prompted the National Police Service to launch investigations into the incident.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja condemned the chaos, describing it as unacceptable and warning that places of worship must remain free from violence and political intimidation. He directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct urgent inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also denounced the attack, saying violence in a place of worship was deeply troubling and that those responsible would be held accountable. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting freedom of worship and maintaining law and order.

Against this backdrop, Wamuchomba’s presence at the UDA NGC meeting now signals a possible political recalibration.

The meeting focused on reviewing the Kenya Kwanza administration’s performance, with leaders presented with a scorecard on the implementation of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The session also received a report from the party’s National Elections Board on the status of UDA’s grassroots elections.
